Adding texture to an acrylic painting is one of the most direct ways to give a surface physical presence — and sand is one of the most natural and appealing textures to work with. The temptation to simply mix beach or garden sand into acrylic paint is understandable, but it comes with a significant practical problem: natural sand contains impurities that can seriously compromise the chemistry of the paint film over time, leading to cracking, instability, and deterioration. Winsor & Newton Galeria Sand Texture Gel solves this by using refined and purified sand — processed to remove impurities — suspended in an acrylic gel medium that is fully compatible with acrylic paint and dries to a durable, stable, long-lasting finish.
The texture is fine and even in grain, giving a consistent sandy surface quality rather than the unpredictable variation of unprocessed sand. It is finer than the pumice particle used in mineral or large grain texture gels, making it well suited to subjects and applications where a naturalistic sandy or rough ground texture is needed without excessive coarseness — beaches, stone, earth, rough plaster, aged surfaces, and mixed media grounds among them.
The gel can be used in two ways. Mixed directly with acrylic colour on the palette, it adds body, volume, and texture to the paint itself, allowing textured marks to be made in colour. Used alone and applied to the canvas or support before painting, it creates a colourless textured ground that can be overpainted once dry — giving the texture independence from the colour applied on top. Both approaches can be combined in the same work. The gel can be applied with a brush or a palette knife, and dries without yellowing. All Galeria mediums share the same acrylic binder as Galeria Acrylic paint and are fully intermixable with one another.
What is the difference between Sand Texture Gel and Mineral Texture Gel? The key difference is grain size and character. Sand Texture Gel uses refined purified sand with a fine, even grain — producing a smooth, consistent sandy texture. Mineral Texture Gel uses pumice, which has a coarser, more irregular particle and produces a rougher, more granular surface. Sand is the finer and more controlled of the two for applications where a naturalistic sandy texture is needed.
Can it be mixed directly with acrylic paint? Yes — mix it on the palette with acrylic colour to add texture and volume to the paint itself. The purified sand will not compromise the paint film chemistry, unlike unprocessed natural sand.
Can it be applied to the canvas before painting? Yes — apply it to the dry support with a brush or palette knife and allow it to dry completely before painting over it. This creates a textured ground onto which colour can be washed, glazed, or painted in any technique.
Does it dry clear? Yes — used alone it dries to a colourless finish, allowing the texture to be revealed entirely through the paint applied over it.
Does it yellow over time? No — the acrylic gel binder is formulated to resist yellowing, keeping the surface stable and colour-neutral over time.
Is it compatible with other Galeria mediums? Yes — all Galeria mediums share the same acrylic binder and are fully intermixable with each other and with Galeria Acrylic paint.
