A brush washing basin that takes the process seriously. The Royal & Langnickel Square Brush Basin is a heavy-duty plastic wash basin divided into three distinct compartments — soaking, scrubbing, and rinsing — each serving a specific purpose in the brush cleaning process, and together producing a considerably more thorough clean than a single jar of water allows.

The three-compartment design is the key practical quality. The soaking compartment suspends heavily soiled brushes on three brush rests that hold the bristles in solvent or water without the tips resting on the bottom — which is the single most common cause of brush damage during cleaning, as resting on the tip bends and permanently deforms the bristles. The scrubbing compartment has grooved ridges moulded into the bottom that work the bristles against a textured surface to loosen and remove pigment more effectively than swirling in plain water. The rinsing compartment provides a clean final rinse that removes the last traces of pigment without recontaminating the brush from the scrubbing residue.

The basin is heavy-duty — solid, stable, and weighted enough to stay in place during energetic scrubbing without sliding around the desk. It has the capacity to store up to 22 brushes, making it a practical all-in-one solution for a complete brush kit. Suitable for water-based media — watercolour, gouache, acrylic, and ink — and for use with water or appropriate solvents for oil painting.

Compartments: 3 — soaking, scrubbing, rinsing
Brush rests: 3 — suspend bristles during soaking to prevent tip damage
Brush storage capacity: 22 brushes
Construction: Heavy-duty plastic
Suitable for: Water-based media and solvents

Why does a brush basin have three compartments?
Each compartment serves a different purpose — soaking loosens heavy pigment build-up without damaging bristles, scrubbing removes pigment using grooved ridges in the bottom, and rinsing provides a clean final wash. Using separate compartments prevents clean water becoming immediately contaminated and gives a more thorough clean than a single water jar.

Why are brush rests important during soaking?
Resting brushes on their tips during soaking permanently bends and deforms the bristles. The three brush rests in the soaking compartment suspend the bristles in the water or solvent without any contact with the bottom, preserving the shape of the brush through the soaking process.

Can it be used with solvents for oil painting?
Yes — the heavy-duty plastic construction is suitable for use with mineral spirits and low-odour solvents as well as water. Always ensure adequate ventilation when using solvents.

How many brushes can it store?
Up to 22 brushes can be stored in the basin — a practical capacity for a full working brush kit.
