Pro Arte Sentinel Red Sable Watercolour Brush — Individual
£4.95
A genuine natural hair watercolour brush at a price point that makes professional-quality sable accessible to a wider range of painters. The Pro Arte Sentinel uses hand-tied red sable — a natural animal hair renowned for its softness, colour-holding capacity, and fine point — positioned as a high-quality, more affordable alternative to the Kolinsky sable that sits at the very top of the watercolour brush market.
Red sable has a long and distinguished history in watercolour painting. Softer and more supple than synthetic filaments, it holds a generous reservoir of water and pigment in the belly and releases it in a controlled, even flow as the brush is drawn across the surface. The natural taper of the sable hairs means the tip comes to a fine, consistent point with good spring — returning to shape after each stroke and maintaining that point through sustained use in a way that marks out a quality natural hair brush from a synthetic alternative.
The Sentinel's shorter hair length is a deliberate design choice. A shorter filament gives the painter greater control over the brush — the reduced flex means the tip responds more directly to changes in pressure and direction, making it particularly well suited to controlled detail work, precise marks, and any painting style where responsiveness and accuracy are the priority. This makes it a slightly different tool from a full-length sable round, and a complementary rather than competing choice for painters who use both.
Each brush is hand-tied — a traditional construction method in which the hairs are individually aligned and secured by hand rather than by machine, ensuring that every filament is correctly positioned to contribute to the belly and the point. Made by Pro Arte in Skipton, North Yorkshire.
Sold individually. Available in sizes 3/0, 2/0, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
What is red sable and how does it differ from Kolinsky sable? Red sable comes from the tail hair of various weasel species and is prized for its softness, spring, and water-holding capacity. Kolinsky sable — taken specifically from the Siberian mink — is generally considered the finest natural watercolour brush hair available, with exceptional spring and a particularly fine, stable point. Red sable is softer and more supple, slightly less springy than Kolinsky, and considerably more accessible in price. For painters who want a genuine natural hair brush without the cost of Kolinsky, red sable is the natural step down.
Why does a shorter hair length give more control? A shorter filament has less flex than a longer one — the tip responds more directly and immediately to pressure and directional changes rather than following the arc of a longer, more flexible hair. This makes shorter-length brushes particularly well suited to controlled, precise work where the painter wants the brush to go exactly where they direct it.
What media is the Sentinel suitable for? Primarily watercolour and gouache. The soft natural hair also works well with ink. For acrylic work a synthetic brush is more appropriate, as acrylic paint can be harsh on natural hair over time.
How should it be cared for? Rinse thoroughly in clean water after every use, reshape the tip gently with your fingers, and store upright in a jar or flat — never resting on the tip. Do not leave standing in water as this will loosen the ferrule and damage the hair over time. Natural sable brushes benefit from occasional conditioning with a small amount of brush soap.
