The right needle for heavyweight fabrics — and a detail that makes a genuine difference to stitch quality, thread tension, and the longevity of both your machine and your materials. The Milward Universal Heavy 100/16 is a large-diameter sewing machine needle designed specifically for sewing thick, dense, and heavyweight fabrics where a standard needle would bend, break, or produce uneven stitching.

Size 100/16 refers to the diameter of the needle shaft — 1.0mm in metric, 16 in the American system — making it one of the larger universal needle sizes available and suited to fabrics that require a needle with enough strength to penetrate multiple layers cleanly without deflecting. The universal tip is slightly rounded — giving it the ability to work on both woven and knit fabrics — with enough sharpness to pierce heavyweight materials cleanly in a single pass without dragging or distorting the weave.

Typical applications include heavy canvas, upholstery fabric, denim, heavy twill, thick quilts and padded layers, heavy linen, and any multi-layer sewing project where lighter needle sizes would struggle. The needle is not a specialist jeans or denim needle — for very heavy denim, a dedicated jeans needle with a sharper, stronger tip gives better results — but for general heavyweight sewing across a broad range of thick fabrics it is an excellent, versatile choice.

The shank, groove, and eye are designed and finished to Milward's quality standards — the eye is smooth with no snags that would damage thread, and the polished shaft glides through fabric without unnecessary resistance. Compatible with most modern domestic sewing machines including Bernina, Brother, Elna, Husqvarna, Janome, Pfaff, Singer, Viking, and most others that use the standard flat-shank needle.

What fabrics is size 100/16 suitable for?
Heavy canvas, upholstery fabric, heavy denim, thick twill, heavy linen, multi-layer quilts, padded fabrics, and any heavyweight or densely woven material where lighter needle sizes would bend or produce uneven stitches.

What is the difference between universal and jeans needles at this size?
A universal needle has a slightly rounded tip suitable for both woven and knit fabrics. A jeans needle has a sharper, more tapered tip and a stiffer shank specifically designed to penetrate very dense denim and heavy twill in a straight line without deflecting. For most heavyweight sewing the universal is versatile enough; for sustained sewing on heavy denim or canvas specifically, a jeans needle is the better choice.

Will it fit my sewing machine?
Size 100/16 universal needles are compatible with most modern domestic sewing machines that use a standard flat-shank needle — including Bernina, Brother, Elna, Husqvarna, Janome, Pfaff, Singer, and Viking. Always check your machine's manual if in doubt.

How often should sewing machine needles be changed?
As a general rule, change your needle after every 8 to 10 hours of sewing, or at the start of every new significant project. A blunt or bent needle causes skipped stitches, thread breakage, and can damage fabric — symptoms that are often mistaken for machine faults but are usually resolved immediately by a fresh needle.
