The pocket-sized scissors sharpener designed specifically for sewing and fabric scissors — and one of those genuinely useful tools that earns its place in a sewing kit immediately. The Fiskars SewSharp is a compact, handheld sharpener that restores the cutting edge of scissors quickly and easily, extending the life of good sewing scissors considerably and keeping them performing at their best between uses.
The sharpener uses a ceramic sharpening rod that restores the blade to its correct angle — the key to effective sharpening is not just removing material from the blade but restoring it to precisely the right bevel, and the SewSharp's ceramic rod does this automatically without any skill or manual adjustment required. To use, insert the scissors into the slot with the opening facing upward, apply gentle pressure to the blades, and pull the scissors toward you. A few passes is typically all that is needed to restore a noticeably sharper edge.
The handheld format is the SewSharp's most practical quality. Small enough to fit inside a pocket, sewing kit, or notions bag, it is the kind of tool that can be kept permanently with a sewing kit rather than stored in a drawer and forgotten. Keeping scissors sharp is a habit that is much easier to maintain when the means to do so is always immediately to hand — a few passes before or after a sewing session costs nothing in time and keeps scissors in consistently good condition.
Made by Fiskars — the Finnish tool company that has been making scissors since 1967 and whose understanding of what makes a scissors blade perform well is reflected in every aspect of this sharpener's design.
How do you use the Fiskars SewSharp?
Insert the scissors into the slot with the opening facing upward. Apply gentle pressure to the blades and pull the scissors toward you through the slot. Repeat two or three times. Wipe the blades carefully after sharpening to remove any metal dust before using.
What scissors is it suitable for?
Sewing scissors, fabric scissors, dressmaking scissors, and general purpose craft scissors. It is not suitable for pinking shears, serrated scissors, or curved scissors.
How often should I use it?
Regular light sharpening maintains a better edge than infrequent heavy sharpening. A few passes before or after each sewing session, or whenever any dragging or reduction in cutting quality is noticed, will keep scissors in excellent condition.
Is it suitable for left-handed scissors?
No — the SewSharp is designed for right-handed scissors. For left-handed scissors a different sharpening solution is needed.
