The cool-toned companion to the Seawhite Tan Crush range — the same ecological Corn Crush paper, the same recycled food industry by-product manufacturing process using hydroelectric power, the same wide spiral binding and all-media capability, but with a natural cool grey ground that gives finished drawings a different character and mood entirely.

Where the Tan Crush suits warm, earthy subjects and a naturalistic palette, the Grey Crush is the toned ground of choice for cooler, more atmospheric, and more contemporary work. The mid-grey tone sits naturally with graphite, charcoal, pencil, and ink, and provides an excellent base for work where subtle tonal control is the priority. White and light media — chalk, white pencil, white ink, light pastels — lift away from the grey ground with real brilliance, while darker media perform just as confidently as they would on white paper. The cool neutrality of the ground suits urban sketching, architectural drawing, figure work, and any subject where a warm, earthy tone would feel at odds with the mood of the piece.

The paper is 140gsm Corn Crush — made from recycled corn cob by-products from the food industry, processed using hydroelectric power, and sized internally for extra wet strength that makes it more capable with wet media than standard coloured or toned paper. It handles pencil, graphite, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, fine liner, watercolour washes, light acrylic, and mixed media. The wide 3/4" spiral wire binding opens completely flat, providing full access to every millimetre of the page. 30 leaves per book. Acid-free. Made in the UK by Seawhite of Brighton.

Available in A4 portrait and A3 portrait.

What is the difference between the Grey Crush and Tan Crush sketchbooks? The only difference is the paper tone — Grey Crush has a cool mid-grey ground, Tan Crush has a warm earthy tan ground. Both use the same 140gsm Corn Crush paper made from recycled corn cob by-products, both have the same binding, the same sheet count, and the same all-media capability. The choice between them is a matter of which ground tone suits your subject matter and working style.

Why work on grey paper? A cool grey ground suits subjects and moods where warmth would be inappropriate — urban and architectural sketching, figure drawing, still life, and any work where a neutral, contemporary quality is the aim. White and light media lift brilliantly from the grey surface, while dark media perform just as well as on white paper. The grey tone works as the mid-tone of the composition, allowing lights and darks to be built simultaneously.

What media can be used on the Grey Crush paper? Pencil, graphite, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, fine liner, white chalk, coloured pencils, watercolour washes, light acrylic, and mixed media. The internal sizing gives the paper extra wet strength for wet media applications.

Does the binding allow the book to open flat? Yes — the wide 3/4" spiral wire binding opens completely flat, giving full access to the usable surface of every page right to the edges.

Is it environmentally friendly? Yes — made from recycled corn cob by-products using hydroelectric power. Acid-free for long-term stability.
