Craft and Canvas, Hebden Bridge — art supplies, yarn, and haberdashery for the North of England
There are not many independent art supply shops left that stock Wallace Seymour oil paints in every series from 1 to 8, carry the Malabrigo yarn range, and can tell you from personal experience which Bockingford watercolour paper handles wet-on-wet best. Craft and Canvas in Hebden Bridge is one of them.
We are an independent shop at 3 Carlton Street in the centre of Hebden Bridge, open Tuesday to Friday and weekends. We stock premium art supplies, yarn, wool, and haberdashery — and we know what we stock well enough to give you a straight answer when you ask for advice.
This post is for artists, knitters, and makers across the North of England who are looking for a specialist independent shop rather than a chain, and who want materials that are worth buying.
What we stock
Our art supplies range covers oil painting, watercolour, acrylic, drawing, printmaking, and mixed media. Brands include Wallace Seymour, Caran d'Ache, Sennelier, Daler-Rowney, Faber-Castell, Winsor & Newton, and Uni POSCA, among others.
Wallace Seymour is the range we are most proud of. This small British company makes oil paints, acrylics, and watercolours in small batches using traditional methods, genuine historical pigments, and no fillers or drying agents. Their oil paint range runs from Series 1 at £9.95 per tube through to Series 8 at £87.10 — which includes Lapis Lazuli ground from genuine Afghan semi-precious stone and Genuine Vermilion made from mercuric sulphide, the same pigment Titian used. Wallace Seymour do not sell direct to artists. We are one of a small number of UK retailers who stock the full range.
For watercolour painters, we carry Winsor Newton Cotman and the Wallace Seymour Vintage Watercolour range — including the Series C geological colours such as Torridon Sandstone, Moughton Whetstone, and Scottish Red Granite, which are unavailable from any other manufacturer.
Our drawing and sketching range covers Faber-Castell, Derwent, Staedtler, Caran d'Ache, and Uni POSCA markers in the full range of nib sizes and colours. Sketchbooks and paper from Seawhite, Hahnemühle, and others are stocked alongside canvases, surfaces, and a full range of brushes and mediums.
On the yarn side, we carry Rowan, Malabrigo, West Yorkshire Spinners, Baa Ram Ewe, and a carefully selected range of other premium yarn brands. Malabrigo in particular is scarce in the North of England and we are one of very few stockists in the region. Our haberdashery covers sewing, embroidery, cross stitch, and general making — threads, needles, scissors, interfacing, and tools from Prym, Clover, and others.
Why Hebden Bridge
Hebden Bridge is a particular kind of town. It has a long tradition of independent creative life, a strong making community, excellent cafes and restaurants, walks along the Rochdale Canal and up onto the surrounding moors, and a high street that is almost entirely independent shops. It is worth a day out in its own right.
The town is more accessible than people sometimes assume. From Leeds it is around 45 minutes by car. From Manchester around 55 minutes. From Bradford around 40 minutes, and from Halifax around 15 minutes. Hebden Bridge has its own railway station a short walk from the town centre, with regular services from Leeds and Manchester. There are several car parks in the town centre and parking is straightforward.
We are at 3 Carlton Street, in the centre of town, a short walk from the station and the main car parks.
