Canvas panels are one of those deceptively straightforward products that repay closer attention. At their best — and Seawhite's are at their best — they offer a painting surface that is rigid, stable, and properly prepared, at a price that makes experimental and practice work genuinely economical without any compromise in quality. These are not budget substitutes for stretched canvas. They are a different and legitimate painting support with real practical advantages of their own.

Each panel is made from 280gsm 100% cotton canvas quadruple primed with white gesso and laminated to a 2mm rigid board. The quadruple priming is a significant detail — it means the surface is fully sealed and ready to accept paint immediately with no further preparation, and that the absorbency is consistent and controlled across the whole panel. The medium grain surface gives a gentle tooth that suits brush and knife work well, providing enough grip for the paint to adhere cleanly without the rough texture that can interrupt detailed or smooth work. The cotton construction is acid-free, meaning the panel will not yellow or deteriorate over time — an important consideration for any work intended to be kept.

The rigid board construction has practical advantages over stretched canvas for many types of work. There is no give or bounce in the surface, which is preferred by many painters — particularly those working with a palette knife — and eliminates the risk of denting or puncturing the support. Panels store flat and stack efficiently, are considerably easier to transport and post than stretched canvases, and the standard A-series sizes fit standard frames exactly, removing the need for custom framing. Each panel is individually wrapped in cellophane to keep it clean and undamaged until use.

We stock Seawhite Canvas Panels in eight sizes: A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, 15x15cm, 30x30cm, and 50x50cm — covering everything from small studies and colour sketches through to substantial finished work. The square formats are particularly useful for artists who prefer to work outside the standard portrait and landscape proportions.

What media are Seawhite Canvas Panels suitable for? They are primarily designed for oil and acrylic painting, and the quadruple gesso priming makes them immediately ready for both without any additional preparation. They are also suitable for mixed media, collage, and other applications where a rigid, primed surface is useful.

Do they need any preparation before use? No — the quadruple gesso priming means they are ready to paint on straight from the packaging. Additional gesso can be applied if a smoother or more heavily primed surface is preferred, but it is not necessary.

What is the advantage of a canvas panel over a stretched canvas? Panels are rigid, which eliminates bounce and the risk of denting. They store and transport flat, stack easily, and fit standard frame sizes without custom framing. For plein air work, studies, and practice, they are considerably more practical and economical than stretched canvases.

Can they be framed? Yes — the A-series sizes correspond exactly to standard frame sizes, making framing straightforward and inexpensive. The square formats can be framed using standard square frames in the corresponding size.

Are they acid-free? Yes — the 100% cotton canvas and board construction is acid-free throughout, meaning the panels will not yellow or deteriorate over time.
