An estimated nine billion disposable pens are thrown away every year. Tom's Studio, a small British pen maker based in Frome, Somerset, set out to do something about that — and The Wren is the result. A beautifully made, infinitely refillable everyday writing pen crafted from anodised aluminium, designed to last a lifetime and to make the idea of throwing away a pen feel completely unnecessary.

The Wren uses a Japanese-made fibre tip that writes with a feel somewhere between a rollerball and a fine liner — smooth, consistent, and free from the blobbing or line irregularity that plagues many disposable pens. Because there is no ball laying the ink on the page, the line is clean and even, with a subtle variation available by adjusting pressure. The tip is rated to write for 344 metres on a single reservoir fill — roughly the equivalent of 50 A4 pages of handwriting — and when it eventually wears down, replacement tips are available separately, so the pen itself need never be discarded.

Filling is simple. Unscrew the barrel, remove the cotton core reservoir, dip it in ink, and capillary action draws the ink in. The Wren is compatible with nearly all dye-based fountain pen inks — a huge range of colours and brands — giving you complete freedom over your writing experience. Tom's own Fibre Tip Ink is the recommended starting point, and a 3ml sample is included with every pen. Inks containing shimmer particles or acrylic and shellac binders should be avoided as these can clog the tip.

The body is made from anodised aluminium — lightweight at just 20g, but with enough substance to feel considered and well made in the hand. The barrel features micro-grooves, tiny ridges built into the design that enhance grip without resorting to rubber or plastic inserts. At 80mm capped and 120mm posted, it is a compact pen that sits comfortably in a pocket or bag and comes into its own when the cap is posted on the end during use.

We stock The Wren in Black, Sage, Iris, Raspberry, Midnight, Ivy, and Lilac.

What ink can I use in The Wren? The Wren works with almost any dye-based fountain pen ink, giving you access to a vast range of colours from brands including Diamine, Pilot Iroshizuku, Lamy, and many others. Tom's own Fibre Tip Ink is the recommended option and a sample is included with every pen. Avoid inks containing shimmer or iridescent particles, and avoid inks with acrylic or shellac binders such as calligraphy inks, as these can clog the reservoir and tip.

How do I refill The Wren? Unscrew the top section of the barrel to reveal the cotton core reservoir. Dip it directly into your ink bottle and allow capillary action to draw the ink in — no syringe or converter needed. Reassemble the pen and it is ready to write.

How long does the tip last? Tom's Studio tested a single reservoir fill on a precision plotter and it wrote consistently for 344 metres — equivalent to around 50 A4 pages of handwriting. The tip itself is rated for months of regular daily use. When it eventually wears down, replacement tips are available in packs of three.

Is The Wren a good gift? Yes — it is one of those products that feels genuinely special to receive. The anodised aluminium body, the range of colours, the sustainable credentials, and the beautiful packaging all combine to make it a thoughtful and lasting gift for anyone who loves writing, journalling, or stationery.

How is The Wren different from a standard fineliner? A standard fineliner is disposable and uses a fixed ink cartridge — when it runs out, the whole pen is discarded. The Wren is designed to be refilled indefinitely with any compatible fountain pen ink, the tip can be replaced when it wears out, and the aluminium body is built to last a lifetime. It is a fundamentally different proposition — a tool you keep rather than one you throw away.
