One of the most common frustrations in acrylic painting is the speed at which the paint dries. What is a practical advantage in many situations — fast drying allowing quick layering and overpainting — becomes a significant limitation when smooth blending, gradated transitions, or wet-into-wet techniques are the goal. Galeria Fluid Retarder addresses this directly, slowing the drying time of acrylic paint by up to 50% and extending the window during which colour remains workable and responsive on the surface.
The medium works by slowing the evaporation of water from the paint film. Just a few drops added to acrylic colour on the palette gives considerably more time to blend, soften edges, and manipulate colour before it sets — without altering the consistency, colour, or finish of the paint in any significant way. It does not thicken or thin the paint, does not affect opacity, and does not yellow over time. The paint film retains all its usual properties once fully dried.
One critical point worth knowing: Galeria Fluid Retarder does not contain sufficient acrylic resin to act as an additional binder. It should therefore be used in small amounts — a few drops at a time — and never exceed 25% of the total mixture. Adding more than 25% will prevent the paint from drying properly, leading to a permanent tacky surface. Used correctly and sparingly, it is a genuinely useful medium for any painter who works with Galeria Acrylic and wants more control over blending and drying time.
It is fully compatible with all Galeria Acrylic colours and mediums, shares the same acrylic binder, and can be combined with other Galeria mediums in the same mixture.
What does Galeria Fluid Retarder do? It slows the drying time of acrylic paint by up to 50%, extending the period during which colour can be blended, softened, and manipulated on the surface. It does not significantly alter the consistency, colour, or finish of the paint.
How much should I use? A few drops added to acrylic colour on the palette is sufficient. Never add more than 25% Fluid Retarder to any mixture — exceeding this amount will prevent the paint from drying, leaving a permanently tacky surface. Use the minimum amount needed to achieve the desired extended working time.
Is it the same as the Blending Medium? They have a similar purpose — both extend working time — but Blending Medium is a thicker formulation that also increases transparency and is applied to the paper or support as well as mixed with paint. Fluid Retarder is a thinner, more concentrated liquid added in very small amounts directly to the paint. For palette blending and colour manipulation, Fluid Retarder is the more precise choice.
Does it affect the colour or finish of the paint? No — it does not alter the colour, opacity, or finish of the dried paint. Once fully dry the paint behaves as normal.
Is it compatible with other Galeria mediums? Yes — all Galeria mediums share the same acrylic binder and are fully intermixable with each other.
