If you work with oil-based printmaking inks, slow drying times can be one of the most frustrating parts of the process — especially when you're printing editions and need to handle prints without smudging. Cranfield Printmakers' Wax Drier solves that problem simply and effectively.

Just a small addition to your ink — around 3 to 4% is the recommended starting point — speeds up drying noticeably. The blend of calcium and manganese salts encourages surface drying of the ink film while still allowing the ink to cure slowly from within over time. This balanced approach means you get prints that are dry to the touch without the brittleness that can come from driers that work too aggressively.

It also contains a wax compound, which makes finished prints more resistant to rubbing and marking — useful if you're storing, displaying, or posting work.

Because it has been formulated with a similar viscosity to most oil-based printmaking inks, it mixes smoothly into your ink on the slab with a palette knife — no fuss, no lumps, no disruption to your workflow.

It's compatible with Cranfield Traditional Relief Inks and Caligo Safe Wash Relief Inks, but works equally well with oil-based inks from other manufacturers.

Available in a 75ml tube.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much wax drier should I add to my ink? Start with around 3–4% by weight and adjust from there depending on your paper, the weight of your ink film, and your working conditions. A little goes a long way.

Will it work with Caligo Safe Wash inks? Yes — it's fully compatible with Caligo Safe Wash Relief Inks as well as Cranfield's Traditional Relief Inks, and can also be used with oil-based inks from other manufacturers.

Does it change the consistency of my ink? Because it's formulated to match the viscosity of most oil-based printmaking inks, it blends in smoothly without significantly altering the working properties of the ink.

Why does it contain wax as well as driers? The wax component adds a layer of protection to the finished print, making it more resistant to scuffs and handling marks once dry — a practical bonus beyond just faster drying.

What conditions help it work best? Warm, dry conditions with good air circulation will give you the best results. The wax drier accelerates drying — good airflow helps it do its job properly.
