The finest universal sewing machine needle in the Milward range — designed for the most delicate and lightweight fabrics where a heavier needle would leave visible holes, cause puckering, or damage fragile fibres. The Milward Universal Extra Fine 60/8 is the needle to reach for when the fabric demands the lightest possible touch.

Size 60/8 refers to the diameter of the needle shaft — 0.6mm in metric, 8 in the American system — making it the finest end of the universal needle range. The extra fine shaft leaves the smallest possible hole in the fabric on each stitch, which is essential when working with lightweight silks, chiffons, voiles, organzas, fine lawn, georgette, and other sheer or delicate fabrics where a larger needle would leave a visible, permanent puncture mark in the cloth. The universal tip is slightly rounded, giving it the versatility to work on both woven and knit fabrics without the need for a specialist needle for most lightweight applications.

Lightweight fabrics require lighter needles for a second practical reason — a needle that is too heavy for the fabric will push it down into the machine throat plate rather than piercing it cleanly, causing the fabric to bunch, pucker, or skip stitches. The 60/8 is fine enough to pierce lightweight fabrics instantly and consistently, producing clean, even stitching without distortion.

Pair with a fine thread — 80 weight or finer — for the best results on delicate fabrics. The 60/8 is not suited to medium or heavy fabrics, where it would be too fine to produce a strong seam and at risk of bending or breaking under the resistance of denser weaves.

The shank, groove, and eye are finished to Milward's quality standards — smooth, polished, and free from any roughness that could damage delicate threads or fibres. Compatible with most modern domestic sewing machines including Bernina, Brother, Elna, Husqvarna, Janome, Pfaff, Singer, Viking, and most others using a standard flat-shank needle.

What fabrics is size 60/8 suitable for?
Lightweight and delicate fabrics including silk, chiffon, voile, organza, fine lawn, georgette, lightweight lining fabrics, and other sheer or delicate wovens and knits. Not suitable for medium or heavyweight fabrics — for those, move up to 80/12 or above.

Why does delicate fabric need a finer needle?
A needle that is too heavy for the fabric leaves visible holes, causes puckering, and can push lightweight fabric down into the machine throat plate rather than piercing it cleanly. A 60/8 needle is fine enough to pierce lightweight fabrics instantly and consistently, producing clean, even stitching without distortion or damage.

What thread should be used with a 60/8 needle?
Fine thread — 80 weight or finer — gives the best results. Standard 50 weight thread can be used but may be slightly bulky for the finest fabrics. The thread weight should always be matched to both the fabric weight and the needle size for the cleanest possible stitch.

Will it fit my sewing machine?
Universal 60/8 needles are compatible with most modern domestic sewing machines that use a standard flat-shank needle — including Bernina, Brother, Elna, Husqvarna, Janome, Pfaff, Singer, and Viking. Always check your machine's manual if in doubt.
