The specialist needle for stretch fabrics — and a genuinely important distinction from the universal needle that many sewers overlook until they encounter the telltale signs of the wrong needle in the wrong fabric. Skipped stitches, broken threads, and puckered seams on jersey, Lycra, and other stretch fabrics are almost always caused by using a needle that was not designed for the job. The Milward Stretch needle solves all three problems at once.

The key difference is in the tip. Where a universal needle has a slightly rounded point, a stretch needle has a specially developed medium ball point combined with a modified eye and scarf — the indentation above the eye that allows the hook to pick up the thread loop — designed specifically to eliminate skipped stitches on stretch and elastic fabrics. The medium ball point pushes between the fibres of knit and stretch fabrics rather than piercing through them, preventing damage to the elastane or synthetic fibres that give stretch fabrics their recovery. The modified scarf reduces the gap between the needle and the hook at the critical moment of stitch formation, making skipped stitches on stretch fabrics far less likely.

The pack contains 6 needles in mixed sizes — typically including sizes 75/11 and 90/14 — covering the range of stretch fabric weights from lightweight jersey and fine knits through to heavier stretch fabrics and multiple layers. Using the correct size for the fabric weight improves stitch quality and prevents unnecessary damage to the fabric.

Suitable for jersey, interlock, Lycra, spandex, elastane blends, swimwear fabric, sportswear, and any fabric with significant stretch content. Compatible with most modern domestic sewing machines that use a standard flat-shank needle.

What is the difference between a stretch needle and a universal needle?
A stretch needle has a medium ball point and a modified scarf specifically designed to prevent skipped stitches on elastic and stretch fabrics. A universal needle has a slight ball point that works across woven and knit fabrics but is not optimised for the specific demands of stretch fabrics — it will often cause skipped stitches, broken threads, or puckering when used on jersey, Lycra, or elastane blends.

What fabrics is a stretch needle used for?
Jersey, interlock, Lycra, spandex, elastane, swimwear fabric, sportswear, stretch velvet, and any fabric with significant stretch or elastic content. For woven fabrics without stretch a universal needle is more appropriate.

Why do stretch fabrics cause skipped stitches?
When the needle penetrates a stretch fabric the fibre deflects slightly, creating a larger gap between the needle and the hook at the critical moment when the hook needs to pick up the thread loop to form the stitch. The modified scarf on a stretch needle reduces this gap, ensuring consistent stitch formation even on fabrics that deflect significantly.

Will stretch needles fit my sewing machine?
Yes — Milward stretch needles use a standard flat shank and are compatible with most modern domestic sewing machines including Bernina, Brother, Elna, Husqvarna, Janome, Pfaff, Singer, and Viking. Always check your machine's manual if in doubt.
