Norwegian-style patterning has always been one of the most visually striking traditions in knitted sock design — bold geometric motifs, high contrast colour combinations, and a sense of structure and craft that makes a finished pair of socks feel genuinely special. Rico Design's Bamboo Norwegian Style Sock Yarn brings that aesthetic into a modern, practical yarn that is as pleasant to knit as it is to wear.

The fibre blend is carefully considered. A composition of 50% virgin wool, 25% polyamide, and 25% viscose gives the yarn a combination of qualities that work particularly well for socks. The virgin wool provides warmth, natural elasticity, and the ability to regulate temperature — keeping feet comfortable across a range of conditions. The polyamide contributes durability and abrasion resistance at exactly the point where socks take the most punishment — the heel and toe. The viscose adds a subtle sheen, a gentle softness, and a slight fluidity that gives the finished fabric a pleasant drape and smooth hand feel. The result is a yarn that knits into a fabric that is warm, hard-wearing, and noticeably comfortable against the skin.

At 4ply weight with 420m per 100g ball, this is a generously sized ball that will comfortably complete a pair of adult socks with yarn to spare. The variegated colourways are designed specifically with Norwegian-style patterning in mind — the colour transitions are spaced to work with traditional geometric motifs, creating the characteristic bold patterning effect without requiring a second yarn colour. We stock a selection of six colourways.

The yarn carries the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, meaning every component has been tested for harmful substances and found safe for use against skin — an important consideration for a yarn worn directly against the foot all day.

What is Norwegian style sock knitting? Norwegian style sock knitting refers to a tradition of stranded colourwork sock design originating in Scandinavia, characterised by bold geometric motifs — stars, diamonds, crosses, and repeating patterns — typically worked in high-contrast colours. The variegated nature of this yarn is designed to create the characteristic colour-change effect of traditional Norwegian patterning from a single ball, without the need to manage multiple yarn colours simultaneously.

Will one ball make a pair of socks? Yes — at 420m per 100g ball, there is sufficient yarn in a single ball to comfortably complete a pair of adult socks at standard 4ply tension, with some yarn remaining.

What needle size does this yarn require? 2.5mm double-pointed or circular needles are recommended for sock knitting at 4ply weight, giving a firm, dense fabric appropriate for the heel and toe areas.

Is it suitable for people with sensitive skin? The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification means every component of the yarn has been independently tested and verified as free from harmful substances, making it appropriate for wear directly against the skin. The viscose content also contributes a softness that makes it more comfortable than a pure wool sock yarn for those who find wool slightly scratchy.

How should finished socks be washed? Hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry. The polyamide content makes the yarn more resilient than pure wool, but as with all sock yarns containing wool, machine washing is not recommended unless the ball band specifically indicates otherwise.
