Fimo is the name most synonymous with polymer clay — and for good reason. Made by Staedtler, it has been the benchmark for oven-bake modelling clay for decades, trusted by jewellery makers, crafters, educators, and artists the world over. Fimo Soft is the most accessible and widely used clay in the Fimo range — softer and more pliable than Fimo Professional, making it easier to condition and work with straight from the block, particularly for beginners and for projects that require a lot of hand-building and shaping.
The clay is soft and pliable in the hand, warming quickly with body heat and becoming increasingly workable as it is conditioned — kneaded and manipulated until it reaches an even, smooth consistency ready for shaping. It holds fine detail well, can be rolled into thin sheets, cut into precise shapes, extruded, twisted, and blended, and can be combined with other Fimo clay types including Fimo Professional and Fimo Effect. Colours can be blended together to create custom shades, and because the clay remains workable until baked, there is complete freedom to adjust, rework, and refine a piece before committing to the final result.
Once shaped and satisfied, the piece is baked in a domestic oven at 110°C for 30 minutes — no kiln, no specialist equipment, just a standard kitchen oven. The clay hardens to a durable, stable finish that can be sanded, drilled, painted, and varnished once cool. The finished surface can also be polished to a smooth sheen if desired.
Each block is 57g, scored into eight equal portions for easy separation when only a small amount is needed. The wrapper is resealable for storing unused clay between sessions. Fimo Soft is free from phthalates.
We stock 24 individual colours: White, Lemon, Sunflower, Tangerine, Indian Red, Cherry Red, Raspberry, Purple, Lavender, Plum, Windsor Blue, Brilliant Blue, Pacific Blue, Peppermint, Emerald, Tropical Green, Apple Green, Pale Pink, Sahara, Cognac, Caramel, Chocolate, Dolphin Grey, and Black — a comprehensive palette spanning neutrals, brights, pastels, earthy tones, and rich darks.
What temperature and time does Fimo Soft need to bake? Bake at 110°C (230°F) for 30 minutes per 1cm thickness in a preheated domestic oven. Do not microwave. Allow the piece to cool fully in or next to the oven before handling — it will be soft when it first comes out and hardens as it cools. Overbaking will discolour and eventually burn the clay, so use an oven thermometer to verify temperature accuracy.
Can Fimo Soft colours be mixed together? Yes — all Fimo Soft colours can be blended together by hand to create custom shades. The clay can also be combined with Fimo Professional and Fimo Effect clays. Colours are intermixable in any proportion and mix predictably, making colour blending straightforward and controllable.
Is Fimo Soft suitable for beginners? Yes — it is the most beginner-friendly clay in the Fimo range. Its softer formulation requires less effort to condition than Fimo Professional, making it more accessible for new users and for younger makers. The easy-open, resealable wrapper and pre-scored block also make it practical and easy to use in small amounts.
What can Fimo Soft be used to make? Jewellery, beads, pendants, charms, figurines, decorative accessories, home décor items, buttons, embellishments, miniatures, and much more. Once baked, the hardened clay can be sanded, drilled, carved, painted with acrylic paint, and sealed with varnish — opening up a very wide range of finishing possibilities.
Is Fimo Soft safe to use? Yes — Fimo Soft is free from phthalates and is safe for general craft use. As with all oven-bake clays, baking should be done in a well-ventilated space and the oven used for clay should ideally not be used for food preparation afterwards. Keep out of reach of very young children.
How should unused clay be stored? Wrap tightly in the original resealable wrapper or in cling film and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Properly stored Fimo Soft has a shelf life of several years.
